What the age changed is who I turn down. I can tell from two sentences that somebody is going to spend an evening working out what he wants at my expense, and at twenty-six I took those bookings anyway and resented them afterwards.

What it did not change is anything inside the hour. Nothing about a body at thirty-two differs from one at twenty-six in any way an evening notices, and the men who wrote to check are always slightly embarrassed once they arrive.

What the figure does buy is that I take one booking a night. Nobody is scheduled after you, nothing is being managed against a clock at my end, and that is the entire claim I would make for it.
